Lees-McRae is very close to Linville and is a private four-year college affiliated with the Presbyterian church. Additionally, Caldwell Community College and Appalachian State University are also located nearby.
In the 1800s a fishing expedition first discovered fish by a rock and upon further investigation, the fisherman found a small opening in the rock. The opening lead to a limestone cavern that is called Linville Caverns and is the only caverns in North Carolina.
