History
The area now known as Huntersville is rich with historical landmarks, such as the Historic Latta Plantation, an antebellum house with accessory buildings, farm animals, a garden and interpreters in period clothing. North Carolina’s textile legacy left substantial marks on the history of Huntersville. The town was originally called Craighead but was renamed to Huntersville in 1873 to honor local cotton farmer Robert Boston Hunter. Virgin Manufacturing Company was a cotton mill and successful brickyard that came to Huntersville and fueled significant growth along the railroad line. The Hugh Torance House and Store located on Gilead Road opened in the 1770s, and is the oldest surviving store in Mecklenburg County. This building is just one example of the many well-preserved historic relics in this rapidly evolving neighborhood.
